How exciting yesterday to take in the Winnipeg Jets Development Camp. Somehow when you see all that young talent, it gives you hope that great days are just around the corner. From Eric Comrie, to Nic Petan, to Nikolaj Ehlers, Adam Lowrey, Chase de Leo, Scott Kosmachuk and Connor Hellebucyck, and so many more, the Jets have done a great job the past three seasons restocking what was a bare cupboard which they had inherited from the Atlanta Thrashers.
Getting the chance to talk with young Nik Ehlers was a great moment. When I asked the young man how he’s doing, he responded with a resounding: “I love it!!”; I followed that up with what his thoughts were on Winnipeg; a huge smile came across his face and he responded with: “How could I not love this city and all these fans.” I wished him good luck and told him that we hope to see him in a Jets uniform real soon. That was followed up with a great picture of Nic with my two grandchildren, Ben and Laine…after which he autographed all of our hats. Watching the talent he demonstrated on the ice was awe inspiring…his dynamic speed and shot had everybody in the crowd oohing and awing!!! We may have mined another gem to continue in the line of Mark Scheifele, Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrisey.
It was great seeing Jets legend Dale Hawerchuk out there coaching along side several other coaches. It seemed like just minutes ago that Ducky was an 18 year old Rookie of the Year, and there he is now coaching the Jets 18 year olds.
Nothing like some hockey talk on a hot summer day; watching the Jets Development Camp ignites both an excitement for the Jets future and training camp in just two short months.
