Eight Candles

Glittering menorahs
Candles alighted
Prayers said
Stories told…
Surviving further slaughter
Oil for eight days light

Spinning dreydels
Hebrew letters
Nun, gimmel, hay, shin,
Games played
Bets made
Mesmerizing
Spinning dreydels

Chanukah gelt
Our gifts
Gelt
Chocolate dollars
Silver dollars
Oh how we wanted
Chanukah gelt

Latkes
Three pound
Potato latkes
Dripping in oil
Artery clogging
Delicious,
Scrumptious
Oil soaked,
Potato laden
Latkes

The presents,
Where are the presents?
Why do my friends get
All those presents?
Why can’t we
Celebrate Christmas?
Where are the presents?
I don’t want gelt,
I want presents.

Crying.
