David Rohm was 5-for-5 with five RBI in support of Edwin Carl (2-1), who held the Explorers to one earned run on four hits over seven innings to earn the win.  The game was also the 1,000th for Rick Forney as the Goldeyes’ manager.

Adam Heisler, who turned 28 on Tuesday, led off the game with an opposite-field single to left.  AfterMaikol Gonzalez followed with a single through the left side, Josh Romanski came back from a 1-2 count to walk and load the bases with no outs.  Rohm then connected on a 3-1 pitch to centre field for a three-run double.  Two batters later, Reggie Abercrombie reached on an error by shortstop Nate Samson.  Wes Darvill made it 5-0 with a two-run triple into the right field corner that brought in Rohm and Abercrombie.  Casio Grider finished the rally with an RBI double down the left field line.

“We put together some really good at bats early,” said Goldeyes’ hitting coach Tom Vaeth.  “We were able to keep some things going, and we added on as we kept going.  We’ve just got to be patient.  We can’t rush through at bats.  When we’re able to see four or five pitches an at bat, we’re going to do well.”

Carl worked a perfect bottom of the first to make the early lead stand up.  Carl walked three and struck out seven, throwing first pitch strikes to 17 of the 29 batters he faced.

“You’re only as good or as bad as your next day’s starter, and Edwin Carl was the king of tonight,” said Vaeth.  “He was pitch-efficient, and just attacked them early.  That’s what you have to do in this league.”

Rohm led off the third with a double down the left field line.  Jacob Rogers flied out to deep left to advance Rohm to third before Abercrombie lined a single to centre that made it 7-0.

In the top of the fourth, Romanski singled up the middle with two outs and no one on base.  Romanski stole second and was driven home on Rohm’s third hit of the night.

Samson accounted for Sioux City’s (9-10) only run with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the fourth.

Carlton Tanabe, Romanski, and Rohm added RBI singles in the top of the fifth inning.  All nine of Winnipeg’s starters had at least one hit in the victory.

In addition to Rohm, Heisler, Gonzalez, Romanski, Darvill, and Tanabe all had multi-hit nights.  Rohm fell one hit shy of Chad Thornhill’s franchise single-game record.  Thornhill had six hits in one game on July 27th, 1999 at Madison.

Eric Eadington pitched a scoreless eighth, while Cameron McVey closed out the win with a scoreless ninth.  Darvill started a game-ending double play on Brendan Slattery’s groundball to third.

In the bottom of the eighth, Darvill made a spectacular catch in foul territory on Noah Perio Jr.  Darvill caught Perio’s popfly with his body leaning almost completely over the chain link fence next to the Explorers’ dugout.

Eric Wordekemper (1-2) took the loss for Sioux City, allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in three innings.  Wordekemper walked two and struck out none.

The series concludes Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m.  Kyle Anderson (3-0, 0.81) faces right-hander Graham Johnson (2-0, 2.76).  All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU, and worldwide at http://www.cjnu.ca
