St. Paul Saints 18 – Winnipeg Goldeyes 2 Not a lot can be said about a score like that, so we won’t. But, what makes the evening even more painful for Goldeyes fans is the fact that Laredo squeaked out a 1-0 win over Texas, leaving the Goldeyes only 1 game ahead of Laredo in the wild card race with 6 games left in the season.
The last two games have been tough ones for the Goldeyes; Sunday afternoon they were leading 2-1 going into the top of the ninth, veteran pitcher Winston Abreu on the hill and the first hitter crushed one over the fence to tie the game…which the Goldeyes ultimately lost 3-2 in 11 innings. Last evening, listening to Steve Schuster on the radio, it just seemed like the Goldeyes couldn’t get it going and things got out of hand.
As the ol’ professor, Mickey Steen says: it’s just one game; get up the next morning, the score is 0-0 and we’ve got a chance to get it back on track. It’s crunch time now for the River City 9…you can toss out all the cliches “their back’s are against the wall”, “it’s do or die time”, but it’s really quite simple…the Goldeyes have to win.
To all Goldeyes fans out there…no matter what happens the next two evenings in St.Paul, the team will be home Friday for the final four games of the season. The boys will need you out there cheering them on; as Kevin McGovern told me last week: “I love playing in front of these fans…it’s electric out there!!” Let’s fill the ballpark and do what we as fans can to fire up our team!!

One piece of exciting news for the Goldeyes yesterday: it was announced that Winnipeg Goldeyes’ media relations assistant, Danielle Doiron, will become the first female to broadcast a professional baseball game in Canada. This Saturday evening, she will join Steve Schuster in the broadcast booth, and do the play by play of one inning. I’ve gotten to know Danielle these past few months and she is a really hard working, personable baseball fan…congratulations on making history Danielle.
