I woke up with a smile this morning…our ball club, the Winnipeg Goldeyes, get back at it Saturday morning for the beginning of the long odyssey known as the 2017 American Association season. It’s been 225 days since the Goldeyes captured the 2016 Championship…and now it’s time to get it started again boys!!
My good friend, Steve Schuster, has said several times in the past week: “this is the best time of the year.” For die hard baseball fans, knowing that we have nearly 5 months of baseball in front of us…well, it just doesn’t get any better. Goldeyes players have been rolling in all week; season tickets are ready for pick up; the locker room is ready; Andrew Collier is busy making sure everything is functioning as smoothly as usual at the well oiled machine known as the Winnipeg Goldeyes front office.
The Goldeyes start training camp as the reigning American Association champions. But, as a team and as fans, that’s the past…the record for all the teams right now is 0-0; Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has a lot of his core players returning, but needs to see what he has in all the new players who were signed in the off season. It never hurts starting the new season with: Reggie Abercrombie, Kevin McGovern, Josh Romanski, Casio Greider, David Rohm, Cameron McVery, Wes Darvell, Mikey O’Brien, Edwin Carl, Duke von Schamann, and Victor Capuano
Saturday morning around 11, the Goldeyes players will be back on the field at Shaw Park and we will begin to have some questions answered about the 2017 team:
- What do our two new catchers look like? Good arms? Call a good game? Can they hit?
- Whose playing SS?
- Who’ll be patrolling Left Field?
- Who does Rick have pencilled in as his closer?
- Will David Bergen and David Rohm fill the 1B and DH roles?
Individual tickets for all 50 home Goldeyes games go on sale Saturday morning;
The Winnipeg Goldeyes open the 2017 season on May 18th on the road against the expansion Cleburne Railroaders. The Goldeyes’ 2017 home opener is Monday, May 29th versus the Sioux Falls Canaries at Shaw Park. Season tickets, 10-game mini packs, and group outings for the 2017 season are on sale now.
