Saturday Morning Random Thoughts…by Chuck Duboff

@Chuck Duboff

  • New York Yankees Spring Training Record:  24-9; watching the Bombers spring training games, it is so refreshing to finally see young talent, as opposed to the days of signing “star players” with one or two good seasons left.  They may not make the playoffs this season, but look out for my Yankees, they will be knocking on the door real soon!!

A big part of the Yankees youth movement:  1B, Greg Bird.

  • Great seeing the effort by the Jets over this past few weeks; even though they are out of the playoffs, the players are realizing how very good this team is and are showing that they have what it takes to be a playoff team.
  • That being said…had we had, even average goaltending this season, the Jets would be in the playoffs.  Right now we sit at 29th in goaltending, imagine where we’d be if we were even at 15th?  Five more wins, eight more wins?  Who knows, but Chevy’s goal this summer has to be to sign a Ben Bishop, Marc-Andre Fleury type goalie!!
  • Top priority this offseason…Jacob Trouba signed to a monster contract!!

Chevy needs to get Trouba signed to a monster deal this summer!!

  • How’s all that winning going Mr. President?
  • Guess what you lying, , hypocrite…the noose is tightening and all your lies about Russia will be exposed and you will be sent to prison for TREASON!!
  • Let’s hope this early spring is just that…SPRING!!!
  • Thrilled that I have the cabin in Falcon booked now for six days in May…peacefulness personified!!
  • I can’t thank the Winnipeg Goldeyes enough for giving Laine and Ben and I a tour of the Goldeyes locker room and dugout.  Such a thrill for all three of us…the kids are such huge Goldeyes fans…they couldn’t stop talking about seeing Reggie Abercrombie and Kevin McGovern’s lockers!!  Andrew and Steve….you guys rock!17457764_10154869183725783_4097326211823024607_n
  • Was talking with my travel agent already about next winter’s trip to Puerto Vallarta!!!
  • If you are not watching Schitt’s Creek on CBC, you are missing the funniest show on television; the cast and the writing is unbelievable:  Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy, Annie Murphy, Chris Elliot…I am quite literally in tears laughing watching that show!!  Great to see CBC support this show and watch it become a mega hit, here in Canada and now into the States.Schitts
  • Two more days and it’s PLAY BALL!!!
  • My very good friend, my brother from another mother, Geoff…made such a profound, yet simple comment a couple of Sunday’s ago…it’s something I really want to write about!!  When I talked about the joy and pleasure I had in writing about and receiving messages about the All Time Goldeyes Team…Geoff said: “that’s what it’s all about Chuck”…and it hit me like a brick!!  That truly is what life is about…finding that what gives us joy and savouring those moments!!  I love writing and am equally passionate about baseball…getting to put my music on, make coffee and write about baseball for 3 1/2 hours…that truly is what it’s all about.  Like Geoff and I said…it’s not going to be a thunderbolt moment that tells us about what life is about…but rather it’s living in those moments and being aware of how fortunate we are.  Thank you Geoff…
  • Friendships truly are a blessing!!
  • It has been Pearl Jam 24/ 7 for about three months…this Neil Young & Pearl Jam version of Rockin in the Free World is just unreal; enjoy:  (FYI…watching it on the 65″ 4K big screen with surround sound…it’s like you’re at the freakin concert!!

  • It’s March, the month in which Manitobans can experience all four seasons in one day!!!
  • Big shout out to the Winnipeg Jets for the support they gave to Tyler Myers and his family during a very difficult time.  If you haven’t seen this video, take a few minutes…it’s a reminder of what is important in life:
  • Moments of clarity are fleeting; yesterday afternoon and evening provided me with a peacefulness and understanding rarely felt; it was tangible and quite a new feeling.  Grateful for those moments.
  • Though the Jets won’t make the playoffs this season, wins at any time of the year are part of the growth process…I would like to see Roslavic and Conner called up for the balance of the season in order to get a feel for hockey at the next level.Ros
  • So Brian Pallister takes two month winter holidays to Costa Rica; took a 20% pay increase last year…and now he is gutting and slashing every program in Manitoba. Hope everybody is enjoying the PST going down from 8% to 7%!!!  NOT!!
  • What a very special night it was on Thursday evening watching the Jets game with Laine and Ben; non stop commentary, hi jinks, cuddling and just having a great time!!  #grateful.

    Ben, Laine and I playing

This picture was from the spring the Jets came back to Wpg; 6 years ago and still having fun together!!

  • Watching the World Baseball Classic, it sure makes you appreciate the talent of the players from the Dominican Republic, Venezuala and Puerto Rico; those lineups are power laden…would be interesting to see what would happen if the Mike Trouts and Bryce Harpers of the USA decided to compete.  I think it would take the tournament to another level!!
  • Celebrating mom’s 92nd birthday tomorrow…her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will all be here!!
  • This brief moment of clarity, in a life so filled with angst and confusion, has given an incredible insight into so much of what I have to be grateful for; though always aware of the good fortune I have in life…there is a real sense today of what all that means.
  • In all my years of being a New York Yankees fan, I have never seen them have a good spring training…I would attribute that to George Steinbrenner and his boys signing star players in their 30’s who take their time to get ready for the season and the Yankees ending up with a poor spring training record.  I looked at the exhibition game standing yesterday, and low and behold there are the Yankees with the best record.  With so many young kids in the lineup trying to prove themselves: Sanchez, Byrd, Judge, etc, suddenly the Yankees are winning games and shining a light on a bright future.  If the Yankees had more depth at starting pitching, they might compete this upcoming season!!
  • Once again, I love the team that Goldeyes skipper Rick Forney is putting together; I’ve mentioned this a few times, but with each season, it seems like Rick is signing higher calibre players.  I’m sure his connections to organizations have increased dramatically over the years and he is able to sign the type of player that he is looking for…training camp can’t start soon enough!!
  • Doofus head meets with German Chancellor Angela Merkel; she with a PHD in Physics, he just finishing reading Dick and Jane; the misogynistic, serial liar makes more unfounded claims about wiretapping, but ups it one more by claiming that Merkel was also wiretapped; she looks at the media with a “who the fuck is this bozo?” kinda look:
  • There is always one benefit to the Jets not making the playoffs; I budget money all season for possible playoff tickets.  Once it became clear that playoffs were not in the picture for this spring…I went ahead and booked “my cabin” in Falcon lake for five days in May…filled with such gratitude that I am in a position to take another holiday this spring:

Live from the beaches of Puerto Vallarta; Jose and his son Hector; and an Oilers fan and Jets fan share some good times…by Chuck Duboff

Hector,Chuck and Jose  (Goldeyes fans reading this…doesn’t he look like Luis Alen?)

The white hot sandy beaches are packed with tourists from all over the world; Canada, US, England…enjoying the hot sun and beautiful  beaches!!  Everybody wants to bring souvenirs home for family, friends, lovers and….shops are visited all along the strip…you can get your Mexican trinket, shirt, chess set, tequila and cigars…everybody will deal with you, trying to coax out the most they can.

Then you it the spectacular beach and you see so very many Mexicans selling their wares on the beach: mugs, jewelry, blankets, beads and so much more.

This is where you will find Jose and his son Hector.  Jose has been selling his jewelry and cigars and blankets for more than twenty five years.  He loves his tourists…doesn’t matter where they are from…Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, U.S, long as they have dollars to spend, he is a happy man.  He’s a very happy man during the tourist season…the tourists, especially Canadians, can’t get enough of his jewelry, cigars and blankets.  Business is great during the tourist season…under the hot sun, Jose and his son Hector deal with tourists, anxious to bring home authentic Mexican souvenirs.  Jose is now training his son Hector the business:  “you deal with him now, he has to learn the business” Jose shared these words with me when I was dealing with Hector to get may annual box of cigars.

Early this morning I enjoyed just a fabulous workout; first I hit the beach, where I did a fabulous 47 minute run…the Sierra Madre mountains were right in front of me, inspiring a great run; that was followed by a great workout in the gym here at Canto del Sol resort.

To put a capper on a great morning…I followed my mom’s instructions and had a few drinks for her; muchos Tequila..which ended up with my having many Tequila with an Edmonton OIlers cool was that…seriously…Dean from Edmonton…and we were both enjoying our Tequila and pining over McDavid and Laine…what a great time we had.

A Jets fan and am Oilers fan…many Tequila and saying great things about Conner McDavid and Patrik Laine….

What an awesome day here in Puerto Vallarta…thank you for the amazing sunshine, beaches and hot temps Puerto Vallarta.

  • Thank you to Clara Hughes…while laid up in a hospital bed after surgery, she took the time to encourage me through a difficult week.  You are a champion in so many ways Clara…most importantly, you are an inspiration to all of us who face the daily challenge of Depression.  Your being so open about the challenges you face with Mental Health Issues…you make it easier for all of us.clara huges
  • Al and Geoff…thank you for last Monday afternoon.  Thank you.
  • Completed watching Breaking Bad, all 5 seasons, for the third time.  Walter White and Jessie…daymn, it doesn’t get much better.
  • As I said yesterday:  “Winnipeg, where you get up in the morning and check the wind chill, -29, and you go: YES!!…now that’s better.”
  • I say this to friends and family of those who suffer with Depression; it must be difficult to watch someone you love struggle and make decisions which seem irrational; but, I would ask you to ask yourself this question: “Would someone like Chuck, a supposedly educated man, consciously choose to go through what he went through last week.”  The next time you get frustrated, upset, angry with them for doing something which you can’t understand…ask yourself that question.
  • Given all the injuries the Jets faced in November…and the heavy schedule they were given…it’s amazing they are still at.500…playoffs may be tough…but, I think, if they could beat Buffalo today, making it 3 in a row, they could go on a roll.
  • Think about this: Scheifele, Ehlers and Laine…just those three, 51 GOALS!!!!!
  • The beaches of Puerto Vallarta, the ocean, the mountains, the hot sun…are now within my getting excited time!!!  Two weeks away from this frozen city!!!
  • In the midst of a very difficult birthday on January 1st, the birthday wishes kept pouring in on Facebook…don’t have the words to express what that day felt like, but I do want to thank those that took the time to send their birthday wishes.
  • The Russians, Vladamir Putin, manipulating the American election, is beyond believable…if a direct link to Trump’s campaign is exposed…Trump should be tried for treason and there should be a re-election.  Woodward and Bernstein…go get ’em boys!!
  • These two leaders are destroying the very foundation of Democracy.
  • Watched the Secret Life of Pets with Laine and Ben; man did I ever enjoy that!!
  • Bell Lets Talk…January 25…a day of discussion and understanding about Mental Health Issues…leaders like Clara Hughes and Michael Landsberg, who face the daily challenges, have been courageous in bringing this debilitating medical issue to light.
  • Thursday evening, December 29th, I went to the Jets game with Laine; we had a fantastic time; came home in a great mood.  Woke up Friday morning, December 30th; within minutes, I knew!!  I felt it!!  Ten minutes later I wrote this blog; reading it now, it just blows my mind how the Devil (Depression) can take hold and not let go.
  • Brian Pallister, hope you’re having fun down in Costa Rica plotting more ways you can cut jobs, salaries, services in Manitoba.
  • Been in a Led Zeppelin headspace for weeks now…Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham!!led-zeppelin-ii-1400175028
  • Thank you Al; thank you Geoff; thank you Clara.  I’m writing today, because the three of you took the time to be there for me.
  • Al inscribed the copy of his book, Saskatchewan Farm Boy, that he gave me; some important words were said: … “the best and longest of friends are those who accept each other for what they are.”
  • This is classic, couldn’t resist:esl

Saturday Morning, pre-blizzard, random thoughts; by Chuck Duboff

© Chuck Duboff

  • Get ready Winnipeg, it looks like we are in for one whopper of a blizzard.  If it’s going to hit us, don’t be a half assed blizzard…shut the city down for a few days.  Now that’s a blizzard.
  • That being said…February 15th can’t come fast enough for me.
  • It has been fascinating seeing the computer models tracking this storm for almost a week and they pretty much have nailed it.
  • Wishing all my friends in Winnipeg, across Canada, the US, Mexico, Cuba, Spain and anywhere else I’ve missed…a very Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas.
  • Congratulations to my friend Al Bryski, who sold out the initial  printing of his just released first book: Saskatchewan Farm Boy.  A second printing is underway and copies will be available for purchase at McNally Robinson.
  • Watching Mark Scheifele, Patrik Laine and Nik Ehlers play together, takes me back to the days of Hull, Hedberg and Nillson…Ehlers first goal Thursday reminded me so very much of Hedberg flying down the right wing and scoring on a fabulous wrist shot:
  • Nice being able to help out former students in whatever way possible.
  • Interesting to see discussions which occur following the publishing of a blog; it’s pretty easy by now to tell which readers will respond and what their attitudes will be.
  • Donald Trump: taking the United States back to the 1950’s.
  • Please explain to me the love affair with a despot like Vladamir Putin.
  • Kind of surreal that I have a daughter who is now 39 years old; hard to process…but so very blessed to have her in my life.
  • Really enjoying reading the Bryan Cranston autobiography; what an interesting man.
  • 2016…you have royally sucked!!!!  Leave Carrie Fischer alone…get well soon Ms. Fischer.
  • As I have said to many…the last 21 minutes of the Jets win over Vancouver this past Thursday evening…that team could beat anybody!!  The young guns taking over the team; think about this…the Jets first goal of the game:  Trouba passes to Scheif who passes to Ehlers who passes to Laine for another electric goal.  Those are four first round picks by the Jets folks…how exciting is that.  Now if Coach Maurice could just find a way to get the team to play 60 minute hockey.  We need a long winning streak to get the confidence to another level.
  • The Miriam-Webster Dictionary definition of megalomaniaa delusional mental disorder that is marked by feelings of personal omnipotence and grandeur.  If this doesn’t describe Donald Trump, I don’t know what does.  Watching what is unfolding right now with Trump and Putin is so very reminiscent of the 1930’s…it’s time for the world to wake up.
  • Pitchers and catchers report to spring training on February 15th.
  • Though it causes one to pause, at times we must purge people from our lives…those who contribute nothing and only bring you down…bye, bye.  I’d rather have a small strong circle of friends, than a flimsy circle of inconvenient acquaintances.
  • Time to head down to the gym for 45 minutes weights and 45 on treadmill!!
  • INVITATION: January 1st, New Year’s Day…my birthday; it is a tradition on this day to have family and friends over for birthday cake…I’d like to extend an invitation to any of my wonderful friends to join us that afternoon at my condo…let me know and i can get you my address; I know my friend Al and I will be toasting the New Year with a shot of some special Tequila I brought home last winter.  Look forward to seeing you next Sunday…and saying goodbye to the nightmare that was: 2016!!happy-new-year-party-banner-2017

Saturday Morning Frigid Random Thoughts; by Chuck Duboff

  • Waking up to a Wind Chill of -41 freakin degrees!!
  • Why mom, oh why, when escaping Russia in the early 1900’s did some of your family go to Philadelphia, while for some inexplicable reason, the rest of the family moved to Winnipeg!!!  Then again, we’d be looking forward to President Trump…I guess handling -41 wind chill is more tolerable than the thought of Herr Trump.
  • Had just a great time with Carly, our Laine and Ben at the Jets Skills Competition last night!!  What a fun time…and seeing the expressions on the kids faces is pricelss.
  • That kid Laine…hit all four corners of the accuracy shooting in just over 8 seconds…he makes everything looks so easy.
  • That would be 11 now…hard work, but getting to the goal!!
  • Well, Matha Ticklebottom got me again…
  • fool-me-once
  • I guess Trumps idea of draining the swamp in Washington meant to fill all his cabinet positions with billionaire white men whose philosophies are right out of the 1950’s.
  • Vladamir Putin has Trump so deep in his pocket that he will be calling all the shots on American policy around the world.
  • MRI results on Wednesday…what a relief, blessing, lesson.  The lesson which the Big Guy has now tried to teach me in powerful ways twice this year…2016…living in the moment and not dwelling on what was and what will be.  The anticipation of the results from the MRI had me imagining every possible outcome…relief and blessed.
  • Nice first signing by the Goldeyes.  Wes Darvill, a Canadian boy from BC, played a solid 3B last season and his bat only got better as the season went along.
  • It’s a Beatles, Jethro Tull music listening season…always has been.
  • Breaking Bad…Walter White and Jesse Pinkman…my all time favourite show; watching the full series for the third time now!!  Great writing, plot, character development, setting..
  • Congrats to my pal Al Bryski on the publishing of his first book, Saskatchewan Farm Boy.  You can pick up a copy of his book at McNally Robinson Book Store for $19.95
  • Nice to see the Goldeyes and Jets making life just a little better for those less fortunate…I know the Bombers are also great at helping out around the city.
  •  The provincial NDP is in such a mess…making Brian Pallister look good.
  • Watch out for Kevin O’Leary folks…watch out…it can happen here too.
  • Nice chat with Winnipeg Goldeyes ace from last season, Kevin McGovern.
  • A Very Special Thank You to Clara Hughes who is very open is talking about the struggles she faces with Depression.  An Olympic champion and inspiration for so many…she has given me the strength and courage to talk about the effect that Depression has on my life.  Thank you Clara…have a peaceful day.

  • 66, 520 views of this Blog since its inception almost three years ago; and 1,244 followers who receive this blog everyday in their e-mail.  So very humbling, but also very inspiring.
  • Workouts have been fantastic the last few weeks…first 30-40 minutes on the weights and then 30-40 minutes on either treadmill or bike.
  • So very sad about Alan Thicke…really enjoyed pretty much everything he did.
  • The Goldeyes players, management and staff all received their championship rings this past week…what a great season the team had.

Kinsella…
  • I’m sure I missed several notable deaths from 2016…but, what a year it has been…what a year.
  • Well, that was a road trip from hell for the Winnipeg Jets…after an exhilarating 4-0 win over Chicago…the Jets headed out on a 5 game road trip…I don’t think anybody saw an 0 for 5 coming.
  • Then again…it would sure be nice to have Bryan Little, Matthieu Perrault, Tyler Myers, Toby Enstrom and Joel Armia in the lineup.  The young kids battled, but were in over their heads.
  • Could we have more of this please:
  • And less of this:
  • The rise of the Alt-Right and the Nazi gatherings, should have everyone terrified; hiding your head in the sand is exactly what the world did with Adolf Hitler.  Speak up, speak out and let your voice be heard.
  • Off to watch Ben’s hockey practice today and then its just he and I to Boston Pizza…just because…and then tomorrow, Laine and I to the Jets…blessed.
  • When you force things to happen, there’s a good chance they won’t…let life come to you.
  • Forecast for this weekend: +3, +4 and +6 by Monday…Climate change, what’s that?
  • Trip tickets picked up…two weeks of hot sun and beautiful beaches to look forward to…sure does help get through our long Winnipeg winters.
  • I ask this seriously, given how terribly wrong the Polling companies had the US election…is there a future for Polling companies in politics.  This is a new world we live in…between cell phones and social media, I think its impossible to get a real read on what the electorate is thinking.
  • January 1st, 63 years old.  No seriously, 63 years old.  Huh?  You’re welcome to come over for BD cake on Jan 1st afternoon…img_2243
  • Fidel Castro passes away; I got to see both sides of Cuba in my 11 trips down there; the touristy side presented a facade to travellers…I lived in Havana with a friend for a few weeks…got to see the real Cuba that the citizens live.  Very scary…very, very scary.  You have to be careful of every word you say…and the allotment of food which the citizens get is incomprehensible…we have it so good in Canada.
  • Is it baseball season yet?  I leave on my trip on February 15th…the day pitchers and catchers report for training camp.
  • Pretty lucky to have Steen Taxi available for my airport runs.
  • Gotta hit the treadmill this morning for an hour.
  • I can watch Seinfeld for hours and enjoy it as much as ever.
  • Was so cool sending Thanksgiving wishes to friends all over the States the other day…and getting wonderful responses back…the technology that we are living with today is amazing.
  • With over 65,000 reads of this blog and over 1200 followers, I have a pretty good handle on the number of views to expect from different kinds of blogs.  It really is an interesting sociological study.
  • December 10th MRI…nervous…quite nervous.
  • Just sayin…Carly makes a decadent BD cake for me every year…if you’re in town and can get your self moving by the afternoon…come and join us to ring in the New Year and celebrate my 63rd….with some great friends and my amazing kids.

I hope you are having a great day Gord Downie.

Social Media Shut Down; The Zombies have arrived…by Chuck Duboff

I have shut down my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.  I believe that they are having a tremendously negative affect on society.

Social is described by the Cambridge Dictionary as: “relating to activities in which you meet and spend time with other people”, whereas the Cambridge Dictionary defines Social Media as: “computer programs that allow people to communicate and share information.”

People are no longer “meeting and spending time with other people.”  Social Media is creating a society in which we all become faceless.  Individuals get excited when they see that they have 728 friends on Facebook, yet those same people haven’t interacted with an actual human being in months.  This creates a false sense of being and creates a reality in which people no longer know how to interact at a human level.

Individuals make commentary that they would never make in “the real world.”  There is a false sense of bravado which elicits many arguments online.  This is further exacerbated in the Twitter Universe where individuals go off on rants and have no issue with uttering ugly commentary.

As for Instagram, it is nothing more than a vanity outlet, saying look at me, look at what’s going on in my life.

It is a sad state when individuals no longer know how to communicate with others.  I recently walked into a coffee shop and it appeared as if everyone was connected to their laptops, tablets, smart phones…I went up to the counter to place and order and observed: “Am I the only one who comes in here to chat, to visit with others?”…the response from my friend behind the counter was: “No kidding, I think you’re the friendliest person who comes in here.

When the President-Elect is sending out malicious tweets at 3:00 AM, sadly, this world has become completely detached.

I have not yet made a determination about this blog; I am still thinking about it…I don’t see this as a form of social media, but rather an online magazine format.  I may be wrong; my only reservation about Blogging is that anybody with half a brain could write a blog and I do worry about extremists writing their vitriol online and having it taken as gospel.  Then again the “Internet” is a place for free discourse, so who am I to judge others writing.

The revolution that is needed is a rethinking of Facebook and Twitter and the like; this world is falling a part at an alarming rate and I believe people need to be able to communicate with other humans in a kinder, more friendly world.

No Man Is An Island – Poem by John Donne

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

  • Very humbled by the kind words of some former students.
  • November 19th and still no snow.  I’ll take that!!
  • Two weeks on the hot beaches of Puerto Vallarta…can’t wait.
  • That’s 20 days…down 9!!!
  • I think all Jets fans are holding their breath and hoping this is for real.
  • Kale…who knew?
  • Laine and Ben: “The Jets should just let Burmi go to Las Vegas next year!!”
  • Sometimes things just don’t make sense, but that’s when you have to have faith that there is a greater purpose behind its happening.
  • Yesterday’s blog about Leonard Cohen and his depression, struck a deep chord with me.
  • Not many people are blessed with the kind of friends I have…very fortunate.
  • It doesn’t take a lot of effort to go out and watch Laine and Ben play soccer and hockey on the weekends.  I never had grandparents who were involved, let alone parents who took the time to watch…so, I see how much it means to them when I am at their games…so, soccer and hockey this weekend it is!!
  • Steve Bannon…do people realize what he represents and what his ultimate goals are?  If you don’t know what the Alt-Right is, I would suggest you start finding out…it’s white supremacy wrapped in a fancy name.
  • Exciting watching Patrik Laine and Nik Ehlers…but to me, what is even greater to watch is the development of Mark Scheifele into an NHL superstar!!
  • Echo Cardiogram Monday and MRI on Dec 10…we shall see what we see.
  • Is it baseball season yet?  How many days till training camp opens Mick?
    goldeyes win
  • Love working with University students…it surprises me how many students at that level still have no concept of how to write a well organized and argued paper.
  • Seriously, Nov 19th and no snow!!
  • The Jets play at 6:00 this evening in Boston, then 3:00 tomorrow afternoon in Carolina…two games in less than 24 hours…really?  Now that is why there are so many injuries in the NHL.
  • The cabinet that Donald Trump is putting together is right out of the Nazi playbook…making Jeff Sessions Attorney General is beyond belief!!  an avowed racist is now the top law maker.  I hope Trumps minions know what they have unleashed.
  • Thank you Sammy and Nelson…
  • I used to be such an NFL fanatic…now…not only do I barely watch it, I know little of what’s going on; the constant interruption by commercials, the militarization of everything NFL, the no fun edict from head office…it has just made it unwatchable.
  • Sorry Mike O’Shea…you messed up on that field goal call…I would be willing to wager a lot that a screen pass to Andrew Harris would have worked.
  • Gonna hit the treadmill for three miles and then its off to watch Laine play soccer.

The last baseball blog of the season (Cubs edition)…written so as to avoid another election rant!! …Chuck Duboff

  • Holy Cow…the Cubs win the World Series!!!!
  • Anthony Rizzo, you are now my favourite ballplayer “I’m an emotional wreck.”

    Anthony Rizzo

  • 5 million Cubs fans celebrating at the World Series parade!!  How very cool.
  • I guess baseball isn’t the dying sport NFL big whigs wanna claim it is…in fact, I would suggest that it is the NFL, the no fun league, which is in big trouble.
  • So happy for long suffering Cubbies fans…I’ve been around a long time and I’ve never seen a Cubs championship…they’ve always been my NL team…very cool to enjoy.
  • You’ve gotta watch this video: Rizzo, Ross, Fowler and Mr. Cub, Bill Murray singing
  • Go Cubs Go:

  • Ferguson Jenkins, Ron Santo, Randy Hundly, Leo Durorcher, Ryne Sandburg…all smiling today.
  • Some guy in Winnipeg named Craig…I wonder if he has stopped smiling; like I told you  all season pal, just take it one game at a time and it’ll happen.
  • For Winnipeg baseball fans: between the Goldeyes winning the AA Championship and then some great MLB playoff baseball…we were treated to a fall to remember.
  • Harry Caray singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”…how sweet it is:

  • So, the baseball season is over and I would suggest it’s never been healthier…fans are rediscovering the pure joy of the game.
  •  On a personal note, writing baseball blogs all season has been something I’ll always treasure.  From the time I was a little boy cheering for Mantle and Maris and the Yankees, I’ve always dreamed of writing about baseball…and thanks to a couple of very special people with the Goldeyes, you helped to make that dream come true.  Andrew and Steve…you guys both said: “sure” many times this summer…and for that, I can’t thank you enough.

No paper today…here’s some reading with Sunday morning random Chuck Duboff

  • Day 1 out of 109…feels great and highly motivated.
  • I said at the start of the World Series that I’m 60/40 pulling for Cleveland…I’ve always seen Cleveland as the Winnipeg of the United States…from not winning championships to always having jokes made about them.  Well, the Cavaliers won this season, they’ve got the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame there…now it’s time for the Cleveland baseball team to join in the fun!!  We’ve got a Winnipeg Goldeyes Championship, the Canadian Museum of Human Rights….time for the Bombers or Jets to chip in.
  • It’s been a very long time for both the Cubbies and the Indians…both can’t win:cleveland-world-series
  • So very, very, very cool watching Laine at a soccer clinic yesterday morning led by Desiree Scott of Canada’s National Women’s team.  Scott herself had been a Kidsport participant and it’s great to see her giving back to the community.

Our big girl Laine and Winnipeger and Canadian National Soccer team player, Desiree Scott

  • To paraphrase the ol’ professor, Mickey Steen…the Bombers stunk the joint out yesterday.  Such a crucial game and they were just terrible.
  • Some people just aren’t worth the time and effort.
  • I would say that #29 for the Jets, Patrik Laine, has a chance to be a pretty decent player!!  Ovechkin: “he has a chance to score 50/60 goals” Elliot Freedman: “Hockey people are comparing him to Ovechkin, Kovulchuk and Bossy.”
  • Winning that Lottery Ball second overall pick was franchise changing!!14591597_10154380773080783_6491552696864755528_n
  • “Mexicans are murderers and rapists” “Ban all Muslims from coming into the States” “I grab them by the p****s and just kiss them”  “I don’t need to show my tax return”…Lose a Billion dollars in one year…don’t pay any taxes…have 12 women accuse you of groping them…run a scam with Trump University…claim you’ll bring jobs back to the US after using Chinese steel for your hotels…and this person is actually running for the presidency???   Really?
  • I used to be so into the NFL and now it is almost completely off the radar…more than any other reason, it is the never ending commercials on TV which have driven me away…there is no flow to the game and every time they go to commercial I just lose more and more interest.
  • Textbook case in how to ruin a player’s career: Jacob Trouba!!  Allowing his dad and agent to control things like he is…is ruining Trouba’s career.  I always liked the kid, but he has zero leverage for seven years and to come out demanding a trade and then being told he doesn’t want to play in Canada…good luck with that Jacob…if it was me, I’d have him sit for the seven years the Jets have him under control…Jets have to send a message to future RFA’s that this kind of garbage won’t be tolerated.jacob-trouba-winnipeg-jets
  • There is a 100% correlation: the older I get the more I hate, yes hate, winter!!
  • The Winnipeg Free Press…you used to be such a pleasure to read…now all you are is 24 hours old news and poorly written and edited stories; so sad to watch.
  • Hey Andrew: that Goldeyes mug that I used on our championship playoff run…now 2 for 2 with the Jets…just sayin!!!
  • Watching how very much Ben and Laine love reading is so wonderful…here’s Ben at 7:00 in the morning reading a Babe Ruth biography…takes great parenting to instil a love of reading!!14632921_10157564638125580_92702574251880207_n
  • Couldn’t be prouder of Matt and the determination he showed…I know you’ll be great with your new job at the West End Cultural Centre.

Sunday Morning Random Thoughts: Bombers, Friendships, Trump, Goldeyes and more; by Chuck Duboff

  • Sometimes its best to move on from certain friends in your life.  Just time to say goodbye.
  • Another great game by the Bombers; I don’t think anybody saw this 7 game winning streak coming, but it sure is fun watching this team play inspired football.
  • There are some people you just feel safe letting your walls down for…they inspire trust and respect; very cathartic having people like that in your life.

  • So glad I booked Puerto Vallarta again for this winter…if not for two very special angels in my life, Laine and Ben, I would be living down in Mexico, no discussion.
  • Having over 1200 followers of this blog inspires my writing every day.  I went on a little bit of a baseball run there for a few weeks, but that only brought out a new audience for me.  Over 61,000 views…humbling and exciting.
  • Looking forward to reading Bruce Springsteen’s new book, Born to Run.
  • I have never seen an election like what is going on in the States right now; having taken many American history courses, studied American politics and watched intently every election for decades…this election of 2016 is incomprehensible.  Ethical standards have gone by the wayside, political operatives are in disarray and everything that political insiders thought they knew about elections has blown up in their face.  I dare say this has brought out the ugly side of the United States and I fear for what will happen When Donald Trump loses the election…could be very scary folks.
  • Republican presidential candidate Trump gestures and declares "You're fired!" at a rally in Manchester

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump…ask yourself, is this presidential?

  • Living on the 8th floor of my condo building, I look out over the downtown and the leaves are beginning to turn and the colours are bombarding the senses, just breathtaking.
  • Have met through Faceback,  a very inspiring lady with whom I want to bring to light many of the serious issues which face our Aboriginal population.  Look forward to it Leah.
  • So, John Tortarella benched Big Buff for the U.S game against Team Europe; how’d that work out John?  3-0 loss…with Buff not dressed.  You really are a genius, aren’t you…ya think Buff will be fired up this season when the Jets play Columbus?
  • Buff
  • Sometimes when you want something really badly, you try to force things…best to just let it take its own course and see where fate takes things.
  • You rock my world N!!!
  • W.P. Kinsella passed away this week; the author of Shoeless Joe…have read that so many times and in fact…taught it to a couple of my Grade 12 classes; for those who didn’t know, it was also the inspiration for the movie Field of Dreams.  RIP sir.

  • Watching parents getting old is heartbreaking; as difficult as it was when Dad suddenly passed away in his sleep at 79, watching mom go downhill at a pretty rapid rate lately, at 91 years old…is even harder.
  • Sometimes you gotta “Netlix…and escape from reality” for awhile.
  • “Does she know?”…she knows now…clearly shared from my heart.
  • Big Ben turning 8 this week, wow!!!  What an amazing kid he is!! Love ya Ben.
  •  It’s hard to say good bye to friends who have been with you for years, but, by the same token, when it becomes more aggravation and headache than enjoyment…it’s just time to put it in the rear view mirror and move on.
  • I really thought after the Goldeyes went up 1-0 in the series, that they were set up perfectly with McGovern and O’Brien.  Both got hammered and now the Fish are down 2 – 1 in the best of five Championship Series.  You made the playoffs on the last day of the season, you came back from down 2-1 to St Paul…we know you’ve got it in you…Go Get ‘Em Boys!!
