There’s still a chance boys…17 more games!!  Just win baby, just win.

  • So you’re saying there’s still a chance; last night’s Jets game gave us a brief glimpse into what the Jets future looks like.  Sure we may not may the playoffs this year…but having talented players like Scheif, Troubs, Morrisey, Laine, Ehlers, Lowrey, Copp and Dano…the future is bright.  As for Hellybucyk…last night was his fourth shutout of the season…the skill is there…he is still learning the mental part of the game…the future is so bright!!
  • Thank you Puerto Vallarta; what a magnificent two weeks under clear blue skies, hot sunshine, spectacular mountains, beaches and the Pacific Ocean…see you next winter.
  • Great stopping in to see Goldeyes GM Andrew Collier and Broadcaster/media guru Steve Schuster.  Got caught up on some of the new players we’ve signed…and brought Andrew, Steve and Goldeyes skipper, Rick Forney,  championship Coheba cigars!!  Baseball is in the air.
  • The noose is tightening on Herr Trump…and as it does, he gets more and more unhinged.  I said it during the election…Russia was behind the Trump tainted win…and it’s all coming to fruition.  Trump is now starting to blame Obama for all the coverups and Russia mess…sad Donald, very sad.
  • Making America Hate Again”        North Carolina man arrested for threatening, knocking over gay couple as he said “you live in Trump Country now.”
  • Watch this video and see further evidence of Trump’s success in Making America Hate again:

  • Jacob Trouba is becoming the #1 defence man we all expected he would evolve into…now, hopefully, Jets can lock him up long term like they did his buddy Mark Scheiffle.
  • jacob-trouba-winnipeg-jets
  • So many great friends down in Puerto Vallarta; must say, it was probably the most difficult time saying goodbye to everybody…They truly are wonderful people, hard working, friendly, kind and caring (Didn’t see any of the “bad ones” Donald.)
  • So Brian Pallister spends two months down in Costa Rica; comes home and immediately announces his slash and burn campaign!!  All the while accepting a 20% salary increase last year…after all somebody has to pay for his home in Costa Rica.
  • Warning to my friends in the teaching profession, especially the young ones who have just started their careers.  I experienced the same thing in the early 1980’s under the Filmon government; Filmon Fridays came in and  civil servants had to take an unpaid day off a month.  Then teacher layoffs came; I was a young teacher, with a young family…and 35 teachers were cut from the school division I was in.  Lost my job.  Be ware…the Education system is on Pallister’s hit list.
  • Excited to take our Laine to the Jets game tonight; so blessed that I’m in a position to afford so many tix and have two wonderful grandchildren who are huge Jets fans.  Pretty sweet.
  • There is a 100% correlation between getting older and the degree to which I can not tolerate winter.
  • Two years in a row I’ve had blogs I’ve written about Puerto Vallarta picked up by PV online websites and official twitter accounts.  Pretty great feeling.
  • The Sierra Madre Mountains, the Pacific Ocean, the beautiful beaches, the hot sunshine…all inspire great workouts and clarity in writing.

  • It’s a hit the pool every ten minutes kinda hot today…lots of water today.
  • Watched Manchester by the Sea…though a slow pace, Casey Affleck was tremendous.
  • Amazing watching how very hard the staff in this resort works; never see anybody sluffing off.
  • It really is great getting to know so many people from all around the world…my friend Jose Martinez and his son Hector are pretty awesome guys to hang out with.
  • Jets fans can’t concern themselves with what all the other teams are doing during the one week break; it’s out of their hands now…and when they get back to playing, whatever there situation is…they just gotta Win Baby!!!
  • Those long runs in the morn on the sand are so fantastic…the legs are heart are working so hard; and when the run finishes it is an absolutely euphoric feeling.  That’s followed with a great workout in the gym…this environment is so inspiring for workouts and writing.
  • More often than not, reality checks are needed…if not, things go out of kilter really quickly.
  • One of the many good things to go home to is baseball; going to start setting up my Fantasy Teams, ordering MLB TV and writing my Winnipeg Goldeyes and MLB baseball blogs.
  • Have tried staying away from politics these past two weeks…the moment Herr Trumps name is mentioned…I either walk away or try and change the subject.
  • So very cool that yesterday’s blog got recognized by the Puerto Vallarta twitter account and tourism bureau…that’s two years in a row.
  • Had a major reality check an hour ago…glad I paid attention before it became out of hand.
  • It’s been fun having different bands selected each day for listening by the pool; it was Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Neil Young today…pretty, pretty coolcropped-img_90211.jpg
  • Speaking of pretty, pretty cool..great seeing Curb Your Enthusiasm doing at least one more season…Larry David is priceless.
  • Puerto Vallarta…muchos gracias; though I still have four more full days after today, it’s been great, yet again.
  • Sometimes its just so very hard understanding people…just better to let go and not let it upset you.
  • My favourite view down here in PV; the Sierra Madre mountains just take my breath away.

  • Four more sleeps until two weeks of the hot sun, beaches and babes of Puerto Vallarta.  One of my many great thrills last year while in PV:  having one of the blogs I wrote about how much I was enjoying myself down there, picked up by a PV travel blog.
  • Brian Pallister’s actions are flying under the radar because of the craziness down south.
  • Mr. Pallister: make sure to call them Filmon Friday’s…you haven’t had an original idea in your life.  Slash and burn, while you enjoy your months down in Costa Rica.
  • When people you respect and admire let you down…that hurts…a lot…you know who you are.
  • Pitchers and catchers report in three days!!!!!!!!
  • Can’t wait to watch SNL tonight…Alec Baldwin should be a rockin’.

  • There are those who choose to hide their heads in the sand about what is happening in the States; that is your prerogative…but, be forewarned, Steve Bannon has been playing out this scenario for years, and his Alt Right, white supremacist ideology, is going to result in a Holy War of unparalleled magnitude.
  • The Jets aren’t even in the same area code as the Black Hawks and Wild.
  • Patience, patience, patience…wearing thin on Jets fans
  • Watching the insanity coming out of Herr Trump’s administration on a daily basis is like an ongoing SNL or Monty Python skit.john-cleese
  • The new 60 inch, 4K Samsung TV is beyond breathtaking…watching shows in 4K (4000 pixels compared to the 1080 of High Def) it’s like they are in the room with you.
  • If not for the sports stations and the required basic cable…I wouldn’t have any cable TV…between Netflix and Crave TV…there is so much to watch while not having to endure advertising.
  • Currently binging three great series:  Bloodline, House of Cards and Scandal.
  • For those who don’t follow the minutia of politics as I do, Steve Bannon is making all the decisions in Herr Trump’s White House…and it’s right out of the Alt Right playbook.
  • My mornings in Puerto Vallarta…get up around 6:30; shower and go have an energy filled breakfast to fuel my day…the sun is rising and the temps warming up; go back to room and get changed…head down to the beach for a one hour run on the beautiful sand; mountains right in front and Pacific Ocean in my feet…back to room to switch up gear and then go and workout on weights for half an hour…and THEN…it’s…a full day of hot sun, tequila, cervesa and bikinis!!
  • When I get back it’ll be time to buy the MLB TV package for the season; every game, every day on the 60 inch, 4K TV…it’ll be like being right in the ballpark.
  • I trusted both of you…and you let me down so much
  • Tonight’s Jets game with: Carly, Laine and Ben…does not get any better!!
  • I hope everybody is enjoying their cut of the PST from 8% to 7%!!  Oh that’s right; while Pallister was enjoying two months in Costa Rica…he broke another promise. When jobs are cut and salaries slashed…I hope those who bought Pallister’s “make Manitoba great again” garbage are happy.pallister
  • Last year while in PV, I wrote this blog following a so very cool adventure running the blistering hot beaches of PV in the middle of the afternoon…lesson learned…one of my favourite pieces of writing on this blog:
  • Do not like the New England Patriots…when they are so good, why has there been the need to cheat…but, I will give Brady and Bellichek props for an amazing comeback last Sunday…that was one for the ages.
  • Pitchers and catchers report…sounds pretty good, doesn’t it Mick?

Kinsella…
  • I’m sure I missed several notable deaths from 2016…but, what a year it has been…what a year.
  • Well, that was a road trip from hell for the Winnipeg Jets…after an exhilarating 4-0 win over Chicago…the Jets headed out on a 5 game road trip…I don’t think anybody saw an 0 for 5 coming.
  • Then again…it would sure be nice to have Bryan Little, Matthieu Perrault, Tyler Myers, Toby Enstrom and Joel Armia in the lineup.  The young kids battled, but were in over their heads.
  • Could we have more of this please:
  • And less of this:
  • The rise of the Alt-Right and the Nazi gatherings, should have everyone terrified; hiding your head in the sand is exactly what the world did with Adolf Hitler.  Speak up, speak out and let your voice be heard.
  • Off to watch Ben’s hockey practice today and then its just he and I to Boston Pizza…just because…and then tomorrow, Laine and I to the Jets…blessed.
  • When you force things to happen, there’s a good chance they won’t…let life come to you.
  • Forecast for this weekend: +3, +4 and +6 by Monday…Climate change, what’s that?
  • Trip tickets picked up…two weeks of hot sun and beautiful beaches to look forward to…sure does help get through our long Winnipeg winters.
  • I ask this seriously, given how terribly wrong the Polling companies had the US election…is there a future for Polling companies in politics.  This is a new world we live in…between cell phones and social media, I think its impossible to get a real read on what the electorate is thinking.
  • January 1st, 63 years old.  No seriously, 63 years old.  Huh?  You’re welcome to come over for BD cake on Jan 1st afternoon…img_2243
  • Fidel Castro passes away; I got to see both sides of Cuba in my 11 trips down there; the touristy side presented a facade to travellers…I lived in Havana with a friend for a few weeks…got to see the real Cuba that the citizens live.  Very scary…very, very scary.  You have to be careful of every word you say…and the allotment of food which the citizens get is incomprehensible…we have it so good in Canada.
  • Is it baseball season yet?  I leave on my trip on February 15th…the day pitchers and catchers report for training camp.
  • Pretty lucky to have Steen Taxi available for my airport runs.
  • Gotta hit the treadmill this morning for an hour.
  • I can watch Seinfeld for hours and enjoy it as much as ever.
  • Was so cool sending Thanksgiving wishes to friends all over the States the other day…and getting wonderful responses back…the technology that we are living with today is amazing.
  • With over 65,000 reads of this blog and over 1200 followers, I have a pretty good handle on the number of views to expect from different kinds of blogs.  It really is an interesting sociological study.
  • December 10th MRI…nervous…quite nervous.
  • Just sayin…Carly makes a decadent BD cake for me every year…if you’re in town and can get your self moving by the afternoon…come and join us to ring in the New Year and celebrate my 63rd….with some great friends and my amazing kids.

I hope you are having a great day Gord Downie.

Running….training for half marathon; by Chuck Duboff

running winter

© Chuck Duboff

I used to be a devoted runner, but sadly, while training for the full marathon for the first time, my father suddenly passed away and I lost the will, the drive to run.

My initial foray into running happened when a very close friend of mine, a very competitive runner, got me to give it a try.  I had always been hesitant to try running…I used my asthma and weight/athletic body type to not run.  Once I gave it a try, I was hooked and began training for the half marathon on Father’s Day.  I was so very proud when I completed it in 2 hours and 40 minutes.  The following year I was put on a real training program and I got my time down to 2 hours and 10 minutes.  That felt so great; my weight was at a great level and the daily adrenaline rush seemed to keep me in a great head space.  The third year saw me attain an amazing time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.  I had trained hard all winter (even when it got down to the -20’s/-30’s)…I completed two more half marathons at good times and was feeling great with my running.

**** Please take a couple of minutes to read this: it sounds like the story of my life: ****

I decided it was time to give the full marathon a try; I knew with the same training and determination I could do it…and was on a great pace when Dad suddenly passed away.  I lost all my drive to run the full marathon; my training runs were lethargic…and I switched to running the half marathon.  As the marathon is run on Father’s Day, that was a very difficult run; when I entered the stadium for the final lap, I started crying.  My passion for running disappeared.

I continued my six days a week workouts, with a significant focus on the bike; I rode the bike for an hour three times a week.

Something has been brewing in me for the past couple of weeks.  I knew I needed a major goal and it just seemed natural to give running a try again.  These past two days, December 25 & 26, I did two great runs on the treadmill and had that amazing adrenaline rush again…and have not felt this good in ages.  Perhaps that adrenaline feeds and balances out my serotonin…who knows, but it feels great.

running snow

So, I have made the commitment to run the half marathon on Father’s Day.  I went to the Running Room and bought the all important running diary and a couple of layers for outdoor running.

I hope you bear with me as I am going to use the Sunday blog to discuss my week’s running, goals and how the running has affected my mood.

FYI…Running Room gift cards would be awesome, for those who always ask…lol

You have permission to hold me accountable on how I am doing with my training.
